About the Book

Michael Sampson and Olena Kharchenko, who were living in Ukraine at the time of the Russian invasion last year, teamed up to write The Story of Ukraine, a bilingual picture book for children and families around the world to help them to feel connected while also teaching about Ukraine’s history, resources, culture, and people. They do this through the prism of the Ukrainian once-forbidden national anthem. This book is meant to help parents share the story of Ukraine, and for teachers to move students to deeper discussions about democracy and freedom–as well as to help Ukrainian immigrants feel connected to their country of origin.
